BiAxial Multi-Therm Sample Manipulator
Precision Bi-Axial Rotation with Integrated Heating and Cryogenic Cooling
The BiAxial Multi-Therm is a custom-engineered, UHV-compatible sample manipulator designed for advanced scientific applications requiring precise multi-axis orientation and wide-range temperature control. This versatile stage provides independent ±10° tilt (beta) rotation and ±90° azimuthal rotation, driven by reliable stepper motors with external position indicators and integrated limit switches for safe, repeatable operation.
Ideal for transmission experiments, the open-area design behind the sample plate receiver maximizes clearance, supporting analysis angles up to 70° in polar rotation.

Wide-Range Temperature Control
Achieve sample temperatures from -150°C to +150°C with exceptional stability. Heating is provided by a powerful 50W infrared (IR) lamp for rapid and efficient radiant heating above ambient. Cooling is accomplished via liquid nitrogen flow through a dedicated cold finger with thermally conductive copper braids for optimal heat transfer.
Multiple thermocouples are included:
- A primary process thermocouple on the pivoting end effector for closed-loop control.
- A reference thermocouple on the cold finger to monitor LN₂ flow and ensure stable base cooling.
- An additional coiled spare thermocouple for optional sample plate attachment to calibrate gradients.
Once thermally stabilized (typically 30+ minutes due to system mass), the Multi-Therm delivers outstanding performance: **±0.1°C** stability during heating and **±0.5°C** (or better with steady LN₂ flow) during cryogenic operation.

Reliable Design and Integration
All materials and components are selected for clean UHV performance. The manipulator interfaces seamlessly with other McAllister components, such as XYZ translators and rotary platforms. For installation through smaller-diameter ports, the enlarged end effector can be temporarily detached—a straightforward process detailed in the manual.
Position indicators allow easy homing to neutral mid-stroke positions, and flexible couplings ensure precise alignment of drive shafts.
Custom configurations are our specialty—contact us to discuss adaptations for your specific chamber or application requirements.
Suggested bake-out temperature: 150°C (detach motors, switches, and indicators beforehand).
