McAllister 6DOF Vibration Isolator 4″ (100 mm) ID | True six-degree-of-freedom isolation for the most demanding UHV instruments
Standard single-bellows isolators do an excellent job of decoupling five degrees of freedom—axial, lateral, and angular motion. They leave one path open: torsion. Edge-welded bellows are inherently stiff about their own axis, so residual rotational vibration from a roughing pump (motor torque ripple, scroll imbalance, or reaction forces) still reaches the chamber.
Our 6DOF isolator closes that last path. By combining a carefully engineered dual-bellows geometry with intermediate structure, it delivers soft isolation in all six degrees of freedom. The result is measurably quieter performance on instruments that cannot tolerate even small torsional jitter.
When the extra degree of freedom matters
Choose the 6DOF version when:
- You are running an extremely high-resolution STM or AFM and residual rotational noise is still visible in the data.
- Your system includes precision optical interferometry, electron-beam tools, or any setup where angular stability about the pump axis affects resolution or alignment.
- You have already tried a conventional single-bellows isolator and still see vibration-limited performance.
- You want the cleanest possible mechanical environment between a dry scroll or roughing pump and a sensitive UHV chamber.
For less critical applications a single-bellows isolator is often sufficient. When the experiment is limited by the last remaining coupling path, the 6DOF design is the difference between “good enough” and true instrument-limited performance.
